Getting A More Accurate Ping in MW2

Here’s a way to get a much more accurate ping while playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. For those who don’t know, ping is the measure of how long it takes to send the information of what you are doing in-game to the host’s computer, which then processes it. The host will have a ping of close to 0, since their data doesn’t have to travel to get to their own computer, while the further you physically are from the host the higher your ping is going to be. A high ping is very bad, as it creates lag between when you shoot/move and when it is registered, making it very difficult to hit moving targets, or shoot an enemy before he shoots you.

The current display of ping that IWNet shows is rather inaccurate, since it groups you very roughly into large brackets, which means that you may have a rather bad ping without knowing it. This guide shows you how to reconfigure your ping display to show a much more accurate picture of players ping, and therefore, lag. Below is what your display should look like by the time you are finished, note the difference in number of bars displayed on the right.

First, you’ll need to get into the right directory. For most people, this’ll be:

Now, open up mp_config.cfg in a text editor like Wordpad. Then, find the original lines in the file (in the first column) and change them to the tweaked values (in the second column).

Now save your changes, and close the file.

The MaxBars value will change the number of bars that will be shown for each player’s ping. The Interval value will change where the interval between each bar is. So these new settings will take off a bar for every twenty milliseconds of ping, starting with the maximum of ten bars and ending with one bar. Ten bars will mean a connection of less than 20ms (usually the host), and one bar will mean a connection of over 180ms.

Now when you enter games, you can easily tell what your ping is, and who the host is, as they will always ten full bars. Have fun!

can you be banned for doing this? I sent steam the same question about 2 weeks ago and they sent me some vague list of things you can be banned for.

No Cody, you cannot be banned for this. I and many of my fellow writers have been using this since the game came out, and we’re all fine.

ok, thanks for the quick response. God knows steam can’t do anything in a timely manner.
