Here are a few tips and tricks to help you playing Squad Deathmatch in Vietnam.
Keep the high ground – visibility is everything in Vietnam; if you can see them coming then you can likely deal the killing blow first.
Stay away from your squad – if you’re in a tight group, you may fall to a few bursts from an enemy’s assault rifle. Use the dense foliage to your advantage, and hide meters away instead of feet away.
Protect the tank – if your squad has the tank, linger a hundred meters or so behind, where you can pick up and deal with enemies attempting to destroy it. The tank’s gun is powerful but inaccurate, so you can usually pick off damaged enemies with ease.
Keep an eye out for fire – often, the fire of an enemies rifle is the only way to pick them up in the dense jungle. Having one man stay some distance from the rest of the squad can be a useful tactic, as then they can spot any enemies firing on them.
Stay out of the boat – On Hill 137 and Cao Son Temple, you get access to a boat instead of a tank or APC like normal. I never saw it occupied in the games, and when I tried it out I discovered why – you become a monument to sniper bait. With no cover available on the open sea, and a very ill-protected craft, your chances of surviving are close to none. With a full complement, the boat becomes stronger, but remains a target for a well-aimed RPG.
Beware of snipers – if you’re intent on being a stationary target, stay well behind cover. A safer bet is to continually keep moving, unless it’s necessary to stop to evade detection by the enemy. One exception to this is for snipers themselves, as they often need to remain stationary on a hill, cliff, or other piece of high ground.
Shack up – each map contains many small wooden shacks. It can be a good idea to have each member of your squad reside inside in one. Once inside, move to each window in turn. In this way, you can spot enemies coming from all directions, without presenting a stationary target. Try not to have have multiple squad members in the same shack, lest it be blown apart.
Hold the fort – Cao Son Temple’s eponymous structure is a great defensive position, so try to take and hold it when playing squad deathmatch on the map. There’s even a small submerged position in the center that you dive into if you run into trouble!
Take the helicopter – On Phu Bai Valley you get a Huey helicopter to play with in Squad Deathmatch. Keep it alive, and it’s a great weapon, sporting rockets for the pilot, two side-mounted machine guns, and two passenger slots. You can repair the chopper in the air if you’re an engineer sitting in the passenger slots, making it possible to last the entire match.
