As well as coming out with an upgraded, 1080p version of the tablet they’re also coming out with one in a new 7” form factor.

The tablet is called the Asus Eee Pad MeMO ME370, and it is powered by the same powerful quad-core Tegra 3 as the Transformer Prime. It also features the same resolution as the original Prime, at 1280 x 800 pixels. The Memo will also ship with Ice Cream Sandwich, which hit the Transformer Prime earlier this week and is coming to the original Transformer in February.

Its other specifications are quite standard – it’ll be available in 16 GB or 32 GB variations, expandable via microSD, and also comes with the standard wireless connectivity suite (GPS, Bluetooth, Wireless). There’s also a five megapixel rear camera on the back, and a 1.2 megapixel front-facer. The battery life is only 8.5 hours.

One thing it doesn’t share is the price – the Memo is just $249, a fraction of the $499 Prime and $599 Prime HD. That’s putting it in Nook Tablet and Kindle Fire territory – it looks like the tablet price fall that the HP Touchpad fire sale kicked off is truly in effect.

The Asus Eee Pad Memo will be released in Q2 this year, meaning it might be released near the rumoured Kindle Fire 2 and the iPad 3. Even so, this looks to be a top-notch tablet for the price.

This article was written by William Judd. William writes for Mobile Fun, the UK’s leading online retailer of <a

With the release of competitive Android tablets such as the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Asus Transformer though, Apple’s market share has slipped from 82% in 2010 (just after the launch of the iPad 2) to 65% in 2011, according to numbers from Canaccord Genuity.

That’s projected to fall to 57% in 2012, as more competitive Android tablets continue to be released. It seems likely that Apple will eventually be overcome by the glut of lower-priced Android tablets in every niche, much as they did in the smartphone market. They’re not giving up though — the next iteration of the iPad line, the iPad 3, is expected to be a strong contender for ‘best tablet yet.’

We already know from many component suppliers that Apple has been buying up a large stock of high resolution 10″ displays for use in the next generation iPad. This has been confirmed by recent findings in iOS 5 to references to a new iPad, with a listed resolution of 2048 x 1536.

This would be double the pixel density of the current generation iPad, which sits at 1024 x 768. It’s roughly equivalent to the Retina display of the iPhone 4 and 4S, which comes in at 326 pixels per inch.

The new iPad is also rumoured to come with an upgraded processor. As the iPhone 4S made the jump from single core to dual core, the iPad 3 will make the jump from dual core to quad core.

According to eminent Japanese newspaper Nikkei, Samsung has been asked to produce ever increasing numbers of the new quad core A6 chips. Whilst Samsung and Apple have been at each other’s throats in the courts, they still hold a strong relationship, with Apple being Samsung’s largest client.

So like I mentioned earlier — this new iPad 3 is looking quite scary. While Apple’s quad-core processor has already been already equalled or surpassed by Nvidia’s Tegra 3, the better-than-HD screen will be more of an issue. If suppliers really have sold all of their stock to Apple, then it may be some time before an Android tablet with a comparable pixel density can be launched, and that could hurt Android’s market share until the problem is rectified.

One option available to Android tablet-makers is the possibility of screens of different dimensions. Whilst 10″ has become a popular standard thanks to the iPad, slightly larger or smaller screens could be equally appealing. It’s for this reason that some suppliers are beginning to push 8.9″ screens, as a compromise between full size 10″ displays and smaller 7″ screens.

On the computing power front, it’s a closer battle. Tegra 3, the new quad-core chipset from Nvidia, includes a number of interesting features which could give it the edge over Apple’s A6.

Perhaps the most interesting is the companion core, an energy efficient but slow processor core that automatically takes over during low-intensity operations like watching a video or listening to music. This unique arrangement could allow Tegra-3-powered Android tablets gain a battery life on Apple, which typically leads in this area.

Nvidia’s Tegra 3 has already been used to great effect in the Asus Transformer Prime, which is seeing excellent reviews from major tech sites. The quad-core system-on-chip is also expected to be used in tablets from Acer and Lenovo, and likely quite a few others.

The final piece of the Android argument is the new version 4 of the Android operating system, Ice Cream Sandwich. The tasty snack combines the phone-centric Gingerbread and Tablet-centric Honeycomb into a single unified OS, and has already proven very popular in the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, the first ICS phone.

Where previous Android iterations felt a bit stale compared to the svelte look and feel of iOS, Ice Cream Sandwich represents a genuine competitor for the first time. It offers an equally stylish look and a comparably easy to use user experience, on top of Android’s traditional strength in functionality and customisability. Once more applications have been updated to take advantage of the OS, including platform mainstay Flash, Ice Cream Sandwich will be a key weapon in the fight against Apple.

And what a war it will be — if the iPad 3 launches in late Q1 or early Q2 as expected, it will arrive right in the midst of the first quad-core devices from the big Android manufacturers.

Who will win? It’s impossible to know, but my vote goes towards the consumer. With the advancements in tablet technology and increased price pressure from low-cost tablets like the Kindle Fire and HP Touchpad, 2012 is sure to be an excellent time to pick up a new tablet.

This post was sponsored by Mobile Fun, the UK’s online retailers of the <a

You can even run it on your PC… so how does that work?

Well, it works because Microsoft have set up a web-based emulator for the OS, which you can find on their official website. You can check out the Messaging, People, Local Scout, Outlook, Calendar, Family and Phone apps, which gives a pretty good preview of the way that everything is laid out.

Sadly, it doesn’t interface with your existing phone — so you can’t really accomplish anything other than swiping around the menus. Still, it’s an interesting concept and one that you should definitely have a go at if you haven’t used a Windows Phone before.

The Metro stylings of Windows Phone are also coming to Windows 8, so this might be a good way to see what you’ll be getting into — of course another way is to download and install the Windows 8 developer preview, but that’s a little too hardcore for most.

Windows Phone 7 is definitely a nicer OS than it gets credit for, and this is a cool way that Microsoft can show off their work.

<a

The most annoying bug for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus has – unofficially – been squashed. Some Nexus owners had reported that the handset would randomly mute itself, hindering phone calls and music listening alike.

The bug, called the ‘SAV Ghost’, has been reportedly fixed by independent developer Paul O’Brien. His fix rolls out today as a new custom ROM, available in both ‘stock’ and ‘enhanced’ flavours. The enhanced version includes faster rotation and alternative UI options, so if you’re feeling adventurous go for that one.

Of course, to install the new ROM you’ll need to flash your device. This isn’t an entirely risk-free undertaking, so make sure you follow the directions and proceed with caution. It requires a rooted Galaxy Nexus with ClockworkMod Recovery installed (directions for that are here). Here are the directions for the ‘enhanced’ variant, copied from this thread.

Download the zip file of your choice and copy it to /sdcard/ on the Galaxy Nexus.

Turn off, then start the Nexus in recovery mode (hold Volume Up, Volume Down and Power).

Perform a NANDROID backup from the menu

Select the option to apply an update .zip, then select the .zip file you copied to /sdcard/.

So it’s a fairly simple operation; the same principles as flashing any custom ROM. Of course, Google are reportedly working to release a fix themselves, so if you’d prefer to err on the side of caution then it’d be better to wait.

Even if you don’t take the plunge yourself, the release does prove that the bug can be fixed (or at least controlled) via software, and is probably the major reason that sim-free shipments of the phone were delayed until the 1st of December in the UK. Good news all around then!

This article was written by William Judd. William writes for Mobile Fun, the UK’s leading online retailer of the official <a

The phone is a variant of the incredibly popular but ultimately doomed N9, combining the excellent hardware of that phone with a properly supported operating system: Windows Phone 7.5 Mango.

The phone is the same size as the N9, at 116 x 61 x 12 mm and a weight of 142g. That’s a bit thick and heavy compared to other flagship phones (the Galaxy S2 is 8.5mm thick and weighs 116g, while the iPhone 4S is 9.3mm and weighs 140g), although the phone reportedly sits quite nicely in the hand, thanks to its curved edges. Like the earlier N9, the phone will also come in pink, blue and black.

The phone is expected to be released in Western Europe in early November, with a marketing budget three times bigger than any other Nokia launch. The phone is expected to be released at €420. This is going to be a very busy period for smartphone releases, with big new Android phones including the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Motorola RAZR already confirmed for an November launch.

Nokia are releasing two other Windows phones too, the Lumia 710 and Lumia 900. The 710 is a smaller, not-N9 version of the Lumia 800, with a smaller 8 GB of internal memory and a slightly worse camera but also a lower price tag at €270. Of the two, I expect the 800 to win out as its N9 design is the most unique — the 710 is decidedly more average looking.

What do you think of the new phones? The phone reportedly has the same internals as the black version, so it’ll include the 1.2GHz single core processor, capacious battery and excellent (for a BlackBerry) 2.8″ touch screen. The phone will also sport the same 5 megapixel camera, HD video recording and support for Near Field Communication (NFC).

<a

This is sure to be a favourite of celebrities and the fashion conscious everywhere.

Fresher news this morning will come as a relief to BlackBerry fans on AT&T’s network in the US — according to the AT&T deals Twitter account, the BlackBerry Bold 9900 will soon be available to users of the network. While it hasn’t been revealed if this includes the white and black versions, given the recent release of information regarding the white version it would suggest that AT&T would offer the phone. This might offset some of the sales they’ve lost from not stocking the phone sooner.

So all in all, if you’re a fan of the top of the line <a

Most have revolved around the Galaxy S2′s willingness to accept USB OTG (on-the-go) connections; the basic idea is that you plug in a micro USB to USB adapter and connect your USB keyboard directly. The keyboards at work are perfectly suited for this, allowing me to type away on my phone quite happily. All of the keyboards at my house, however, do not work at all in this manner. Some fail due to excess power requirements, and others simply don’t work even though they appear to connect successfully (‘USB device connected!’ the Galaxy S2 shouts, but to no avail).

For this reason, I’ve decided to settle on a Bluetooth keyboard (alternate solution: buy a cheap USB keyboard off eBay of the kind found in the office). As we had a sample lying around, I thought I’d use it for a while and give it a review. The keyboard is called the Mini Bluetooth Keyboard, and sports a full QWERTY array as well as a few function keys. The keyboard is quite slim, as you can see, and runs for days once fully charged.

How is it to use? Well, it’s not quite as good as a good laptop keyboard or my favourite mechanical, but it’s not that bad… the keys have little travel, making for relatively fast typing, and they are of a decent size as to allow good accuracy. The keyboard is comfortable enough to hold in the hands or on a desk, and makes writing out emails or long SMS rants rather painfree.

Overall, not a bad product. My sample happened to come with Korean characters printed in addition to English, but that’s only a bonus for me as it means it’s easier for me to write out Korean phrases (e.g. 소녀시대 , 지지요 or ㅋㅋㅋㅋ) without having to guess where the characters are. Hurrah!

This post is sponsored by Mobile Fun, who are certainly the top retailer of <a

The new design takes the minimalist radio into the modern day with the inclusion of digital DAB radio. The radio, which is portable and weather-resistant radio looks surprisingly well suited to a variety of roles, from home life to travel or even the great outdoors.

I ran into one of the original PALs at a friend’s in London, and it’s nice to see that a DAB version with the same level of style — I’d be interested to see how the audio quality compares. The radio also includes a 3.5mm auxiliary input, so you can listen to your mobile phone or MP3 player on the same lovely speaker. The radio’s available in six colour options, and retails for a crisp £249.99.

Anyway, if you’d like to see more about the PAL+ FM/DAB/FAB+ Portable Radio, just check out the product page.

Tivoli have also put out a press release, which follows:

London, UK, October 2011 - Tivoli Audio introduces the PAL+, the DAB-equipped evolution of the original and multi-award winning PAL. Introduced back in 2002 the PAL quickly established itself as one of Tivoli Audio’s most popular and critically acclaimed radios. Now, in addition to FM RDS reception, the PAL+ sports DAB, DAB+, and DMB capability. And bearing in mind that PAL stands for ‘Portable Audio Laboratory’ the new arrival maintains that exceptionally useful ‘on the go’ ability.

Playing home or away, though, the PAL+ is simple to use. The PAL+’s large display with adjustable backlight means you can’t miss info, such as the time or station details. The package includes a holder for the full-function remote control, and the top-located control wheel let’s you access features when you’re up close and personal. Round the back of the PAL+ you’ll find a 3.5mm aux-in – perfect for hooking up the likes of an iDevice or Android smartphone and enjoying your mobile’s music library, or even tunes streamed via Spotify Mobile – as well as a stereo headphone output that is switchable to mono for improved reception of noisy FM stations.

Stylish looks and clever touches mean little without equally smart sound and the PAL+ doesn’t overlook its raison d’être. Using Tivoli Audio’s award-wining circuitry combined with its magnetically shielded 6.5cm full-range driver the portable delivers a superbly balanced sound that belies its diminutive dimensions.

“The PAL+ embodies our design principles – it looks and feels beautiful, is easy to use, and sounds wonderful,” says Tom DeVesto, Tivoli Audio CEO and founder. “The original PAL is a much loved model and we have worked long and hard to ensure the PAL+ has the chance to engender similar levels of public affection.”

The PAL+ launches October 2011 at an SRP of £249.00. Tivoli Audio products are sold throughout UK high-street stores or direct by visiting the newly redesigned online store at <a
